Secondo me sbagli a prenderla così, in ogni caso sarà una lettura piacevole che potrebbe farti conoscere nuovi scrittori.

beh trovo affascinante questo: la possibilità che in questa antologia si trovi un'etica trasversale a guerrieri di epoche e culture tanto diverse, l'essenza del guerriero a prescindere da luogo e tempo.

La raccolta in sè è anche interessante anche a prescindere dalla presenza del racconto di Martin, visto che sono compresi molti altri autori validi, e penso che la prenderò anche io. Teniamo solo presente che in America l'uscita è prevista a fine 2010-inizio 2011, quindi la vedremo in Italia presumibilmente nel 2012...forse è un po' presto per preoccuparsi.

I really don't know where the time goes. It seems like yesterday I was watching the Superbowl, and a few days before that I was just getting back from Spain and Portugal. The days and weeks and months seem to go by so quickly now... and the pages come so slowly...

Speaking of Spain and Portugal, I meant to post a lot more about my travels there last summer, and to post some pictures too. Another good intention swallowed by the demands of work and the lateness of the hour. I may still post a few things, though. Better late than never, I suppose... and it was a wonderful trip.

I need to post about WATCHMEN (which I loved) and the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA finale (which I pretty much hated) too. In my copious spare time. But I really do have a lot to say about both. The Watchmen/ Wild Cards compare-and-contrast exercise is an essay in itself...

Subterreanean Press sent me an Advanced Reading Copy of the Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, a few days ago, and I've been dipping into it. I'd read all the stories before, of course, but it's still fun to revisit them. I even reread my own story, "A Night at the Tarn House," and thought it held up pretty well. That's always a relief. Sometimes I hate my own stuff when I reread (sometimes I love it, too, I'm a moody sonofabitch).



I hope Jack Vance likes the book. The impact he's had on the field, and especially on the writers in the anthology, has been immense.

I've also just received a couple of advance copies of the limited edition FEAST FOR CROWS from Subterranean. Oh my, oh my. What a beautiful book. Tom Canty is amazing. FEAST is shipping now. Unfortunately, this is a limited edition, and it was long ago sold out. The lettered and numbered editions of the Vance book are also sold out, but copies of the trade hardcover are still available from the Subterranean website... and the trade will still feature the gorgeous interior artwork by Tom Kidd.

Some cool new stuff from Green Ronin Games as well. Their first Wild Cards adventure, ALL IN, has been released, and so has their new Ice & Fire role playing game. I need to write a story about those for my website news page... so much to do, so little time... but here's some pictures of the cover art, to whet your taste, at least:

Oh, and my new Library Tower is almost complete. Another week, and the renovations should all be done. It's cost a fortune and there's been a lot of noise and dust and disruption, but it will all have been worth it. The tower is gorgeous. I'll try to post pictures, if I can ever find my camera. I took it to the Page One signing for BUSTED FLUSH, snapped lots of pics there, brought it home, and haven't seen it since.

Se non c'è niente di davvero importante basta anche un riassunto.

riguardo alle cronache non dice nulla. A parte che ha ricevuto un'edizione limitata di A feast for Crows

A grandi linee il discorso verte su alcuni argomenti principali.
Il primo è che marzo sta finendo e con esso la promozione di sconti che interessava le edizioni straniere di tutti i suoi libri (-5$).
Poi Martin si lamenta di come scorra in fretta il tempo visto che gli sembra ieri di aver visto il Superbowl e di essere stato in tour in Spagna e Portogallo...e che purtroppo il suo lavoro va a rilento.
A proposito di Spagna e Portogallo voleva inserire nel blog del materiale, soprattutto foto, ma il troppo lavoro non glielo ha permesso così si accontenterà di pubblicare qualcosa di breve.
Poi vuole inserire i suoi commenti su Watchmen (che gli è piaciuto) e sul finale della serie tv Battlestar galactica (che invece ha detestato). Avrebbe molto da dire, soprattutto vorrebbe fare un confronto tra Watchmen e Wild Cards, che da solo meriterebbe un saggio, ma il tempo è sempre poco.
La Subterranean Press gli ha mandato una copia della serie limitata del libro-tributo a Jack Vance intitolato "Cronache della Terra morente" e lo ha letto tutto. Ovviamente lo aveva già fatto, ma era compreso tra i tanti anche il suo racconto "Una notte in casa Tarn" , così voleva vedere come gli era venuto visto che di solito odia le sue produzioni passate. Questo invece lo lascia soddisfatto.
La stessa casa editrice gli ha mandato qualche copia della edizione limitata di A Feast for Crows, che trova davvero fantastica per merito dell'opera di Tom Canty (suppongo sia una edizione illustrata da costui...). Il libro è in vendita, ma essendo una edizione limitata ne sono già state vendute tutte le copie in preordine.
Stessa cosa per il tributo a Vance, del quale però dovrebbero esserci ancora delle copie per la vendita comune in hardcover con i disegni di Tom Kidd.
Per quanto riguarda la Green Ronin, ha prodtto un gioco su Wild Cards, e da poco ne ha fatto uscire uno di ruolo sulle Cronache. Martin vorrebbe inserire un suo commento sul suo sito, ma ha poco tempo. Però consiglia di andare a vedere almeno l'illustrazione della copertina.
I lavori in casa sua per la realizzazione di una "torre per i libri" sono finiti. Gli è costata un bel po' e per colpa dei lavori c'è stato un gran casino in casa sua tra rumori e polvere, ma ne è valsa la pena. Cercherà di pubblicarne qualche foto, ma non trova più la macchina fotografica. Almeno la nuova biblioteca dovrebbe aiutare a fare un po' d'ordine in casa...

Questo a grandi linee è il significato dell'intervento.

Qualcuno mi ricorda cosa sono le Wild Cards?

Le Wild Cards (di cui posseggo il primo numero) è una serie a fumetti ricavata da dei racconti di Martin (o una sua vecchia serie a fumetti...non ricordo) è scritta da Daniel Abrham e disegnata da Eric Battle, si tratta di uan storia fantascentifica in cui 50 anni fa (la prima storia di Martin) un virus ha infettato New York, il virus Wild Cards appunto, uccidendo parecchia gente e rendendo deforme altri, adesso questi deformi hanno anche dei poteri e la storia verte sulle loro vicissitudini. Mi rendo conto che come riassunto fa schifo, ma come detto ho solo il primo numero (inglese, in Italia non è uscito) della reprise (che vanta la supervisione di Martin stesso) mentre ne sono usciti già parecchi mnumeri, tanto è vero che a dicembre è stato dichiarato il 3° TPB (volume che raccoglie un ciclo di storie) che deve esser quello finale.

Hiya, kids, hiya, hiya, hiya.

I have some good news for all of you who have been waiting for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.

It's no secret that I've struggled with this one, that the writing has been going slowly, that I've missed several deadlines. Meanwhile, I've delivered several Wild Cards books (ably assisted by Melinda M. Snodgrass) and co-edited a couple of major original anthologies with Gardner Dozois. And then there was HUNTER'S RUN, the three-way novel that I did with Dozois and Daniel Abraham. None of those were solo projects, of course. I had help with every one, a partner.

I have finally come to the conclusion that I need a partner for the DANCE as well, a collaborator to help me finish the remaining books in A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Once I reached that realization, there could be only one possible choice -- my oldest friend in this field, winner of the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award, multiple Hugo loser, the brilliant, irascible, and ever-stylish Howard Waldrop.



H'ard and I have worked together before, of course. He was part of my Wild Cards series since the beginning, writing the very first story for the very first book, "Thirty Minutes Over Broadway" (JETBOY LIVES!), and he intends to write the last Wild Cards story too, once we decide to wrap up the series. But our collaborative efforts go back decades beyond that. Howard and I first began to correspond in 1963, when we were both in high school and John F. Kennedy was in the White House, but we did not actually meet until 1972, at a convention in Kansas City, Missouri. We took an immediate liking to each other, and sat down at once to write the SF adventure classic that would ultimately be known as "Men of Greywater Station." I came up with the universe, the planet Greywater, the sentient fungus, and characters named Delvecchio and Granowicz. H'ard contributed the military expertise (he was just out of the army), and characters named Otis and Eldon. (Neither of us remembered to put girls in the story, unfortunately, which was kind of odd when you think on it, since we started writing it in a Playboy Club).

Now, some of you familiar with the Waldrop oevre may object, and argue that H'ard doesn't write epic fantasy. Tush, tush. You know nothing! Truth be told, Howard was writing epic fantasy long before I was. When the two of us were still in high school, contributing text stories to the dittoed comic fanzines of the day, I was doing superhero stories in prose, but Howard was writing great stuff about musketeers, gladiators, and a whole SERIES of stories about a Sword & Sorcery hero known only as the Wanderer, whose exploits were recorded in the sacred tomes known as the Chronicles of Chim-Wazle (okay, okay, I stole that name for my Jack Vance story, don't tell Howard). He's no stranger to swords, not at all.



Howard is as excited as a one-legged man at an ass-kicking contest at the prospect of us working together again, and has promised to jump right into A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and wrap it all up in a month or two, knocking out the remaining chapters with the same speed with which he's knocked out his own novels, THE MOON WORLD and I, JOHN MANDEVILLE. He has plans for some exciting new characters as well. Wait till you guys meet the mysterious knight with the three dodo birds on the shield and his three goofy serving men!! It's even possible that the Wanderer himself will make a comeback, which I know would thrill all of you who were reading about him in BATWING and CORTANA back in 1965.

Meanwhile, I'll be in the hot tube with some babes in bikinis, sipping some Irish Mist and watching my TIVO replay of the Giants victory over the Patriots in the last Super Bowl but one. Hey, maybe I should tell Howard to work in a knight called Ser Tyree...

Non so quanto i suoi fan possano essere favorevoli, ed per quello che mi sorge il dubbio del Pesce d'Aprile...

Beh, a sua discolpa Martin può dire che sta scrivendo un ciclo e non un solo libro. Magari anche Manzoni aveva in mente un sequel, ma visti i tempi di stesura ci ha rinunciato...

Il buon Martin intanto ci fa sapere che ha avuto seri problemi con la mail (come già successo in passato) e ha perso tutto, tranquilli però, Dance whit dragon è in un pc che usa DOS e Wordstar, (veeeeecchissimo, antidiluviano direi) e che non ha nulla da spartire col pc dove legge le mail, quindi possiamo dormire sonni tranquilli.

Per chi (come già successo) gli suggerisce di passare a Mac, Paris, la sua signora dice di lasciar perdere, è una battaglia che combatte da 20 anni ma non c'è verso, a George non piace. (Tutto scritto sulla replica n° 98 al suo post)

Well, I hate Windows and the internet, anyway.

I've wasted all day dealing with a computer catastrophe. I have no idea what's happened, but all of a sudden I've lost all of my saved incoming unanswered emails. Several thousand of them, including important business correspondence from agents, editors, interviewers, convention runners.

I have four different virus protection programs, two of them supposedly running constantly, and Ty just ran a complete scan two days ago. Despite which, somehow, I think I have some bloody virus. This morning when I logged onto AOL to check my email, all my saved emails were there. I read the new mail -- and my AOL is set to save every email I read unless I explicitly delete it -- and then, suddenly, my Saved Mail I've Read folder was empty, except for the sub-folders I'd set up (Business, Conventions, Personal Correspondence, Toy Soldiers, and such) to sort the mail so I can deal with it. Those were still there, along with all their contents. But about six hundred emails that I hadn't sorted yet were gone.

I spent hours running scans and virus checks, but two different systems found nothing but cookies. However, from time to time one of them warns me of a virus that it can't delete. Warns me in a pop-up. But when I try to follow its directions to get rid of the thing, well, they're not followable. (Normally I wouldn't be doing any of this stuff, but Wednesday is Ty's day off). And I'm getting strange glitches in the virus protection programs themselves.

Anyway, after four hours and two scans, I've deleted hundreds of cookies, but the pop-up is still warning me about something called "Mal Hifrm" which it doesn't know how to deal with.

Anyone know anything about this sucker?

Oh, and now my AOL "Mail I've Read" folder is empty. Not only the unsorted emails, but all of the sub-folders and sorted mails as well. So instead of six hundred emails, I have lost thousands.

That could almost be considered liberating, but damn it, some of those mails were important.

My "Sent Mail" files, with copies of outgoing emails, remain intact for the moment, but those may be next. Who the hell knows? I've been busily printing out hardcopy for my files.

Before anyone has a heart attack... I write with WordStar on a DOS computer that is completely separate from the Windows machine I use for email. It doesn't even have Windows, or any internet connection. So A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and my other work is safe.

Stranamente si sono cancellate solo le mail in entrata a cui doveva ancora rispondere...vabbè che secondo lui alcune erano importanti e altre venivano da agenti e case editrici, però Martin stesso ad ammettere che è stata quasi una liberazione.
Secondo me ha fatto qualche casino lui, visto che dice di avere 4 antivirus e dopo le scansioni hanno trovato solo cookies ed un virus che non può essere cancellato (tale Mal Hifrm) del quale chiede notizie a chi legge il blog.
A prescindere dal sistema operativo e dal programma di scrittura, tenere il pc con cui si lavora collegato ad internet è spesso un grosso rischio e, vista l'importanza per il pubblico in attesa del lavoro che sta facendo, direi che la sua è stata una scelta logica oltre che saggia.
